Loggers' Run attic insulation | Cardinal

Loggers' Run is about a mile west of State Road 7 on Palmetto Park Road. It is fifteen separate sections, not one attic. Winding Lake Estates is on Judge Winikoff Road, just north of Palmetto. Loggers' Run Park, at 11185 Palmetto Park Road, is ZIP 33428. Say the ZIP on the house if the section is different. There is no pin out here. The Google listing is 4263 NW 1st Ave, Boca Raton, FL 33431.

Blown fiberglass at a consistent depth between attic trusses
Consistent depth from the hatch to the far truss. A wide Loggers' Run attic fails this if the hose never leaves the opening.

The drive from Northwest 1st Avenue is why a near-me search here does not start on top of the shop. The attic length is why the eave, not the hatch, is the place to check the depth.

Sealing an attic floor penetration with foam
The hatch and the later wiring, sealed first. Then the blow.

Settled fiberglass at about R-2.2 per inch, topped with new fiberglass at about R-2.5 per inch, is the usual stack. R-38 is the target. R-30 is the minimum, not the goal. Cellulose at about R-3.6 per inch is the alternate when the lid can take the weight. We do not sell R-49 as the Florida number. Palm Beach County is zone 1, not zone 2.

Air sealing on these houses is the hatch, the top plate, and whatever the cable guy drilled later. Baffles at every soffit bay that will receive fill. A buried intake is not a higher R-value. It is a hotter roof.

Dry batts stay and get covered. Wet batts, or batts with rodent nesting, come out. The removal is priced alone. After a contaminated removal, the deck can be treated. That is attic sanitizing, not a claim that the rooms downstairs were remediated.

If the street is inside Loggers' Run and the attic is a vented ceiling, call and say the section and the ZIP. 33428 is the park. If it is a condo with no attic, say that too. Those are not the same appointment.

These attics are wide enough that a single hose setting from the hatch will not reach an even R-38 at the corners. The material has to be moved, or the hose has to move. A drift against the hatch and a skiff at the gable end will read as a full attic if you only look down from the opening. The walk to the end is the inspection.

Tile over a vented Loggers' Run deck also means the bathroom fans cannot stop in the attic. A fan that ends under the tile wets the deck from below and stains the fill. The duct has to reach a roof jack or a soffit vent made for exhaust. We will not bury a fan that dumps into the attic.

Measured against the Florida code

The attic numbers, not a brochure

The 2023 Florida Building Code, Energy Conservation, Table R402.1.2 sets a climate zone 1 ceiling at R-30 and a climate zone 2 ceiling at R-38. Cardinal installs R-38 and checks the inches. A Florida page that lists R-49 to R-60, or R-3.2 to R-3.8 per inch for both fiberglass and cellulose, is using a different book. Table R402.4.1.1 says air-permeable insulation shall not be used as the air seal.

Quotes are prepared by Russell Y, a building scientist, BPI certified, and certified to perform blower door testing. When the door is run, the result is air changes per hour at 50 pascals, the method in R402.4.1.2. That section limits new houses in climate zones 1 and 2 to 7 ACH50. An insulation job on an existing house is not automatically that test. We report the number only when we measured it.

Insulation numbers Cardinal uses against the Florida code

Zone 2 ceiling, Florida codeR-38 minimumNot R-49 and not R-60
What Cardinal installsR-38, depth checkedAbove the zone 1 floor
New blown fiberglassAbout R-2.5 per inchNot R-3.2 to R-3.8
Settled fiberglassAbout R-2.2 per inch4 inches is about R-9
New celluloseAbout R-3.6 per inchDenser. Still not an air seal
Open-cell foamAbout R-3.6 per inchA roof-deck product
Closed-cell foamAbout R-6.5 per inch2 inches is about R-13

Loose fill does not stop air. The holes are sealed first. Two inches of closed-cell foam is an air-seal coat, not a finished attic. We do not quote a dollar amount off the power bill. Ducts in a vented attic stay in the heat. The shop for the Boca listing is 4263 NW 1st Ave.
