Insulation contractor

What the contractor is hired to do

On a South Florida house the work is the ceiling, not the tile. The attic is vented and hot. The rooms below it are the house. An insulation contractor seals the holes in that ceiling, then blows fiberglass or cellulose to an even R-38. Florida's code floor in Palm Beach County and Broward County is R-30. R-38 is the install. R-49 and R-60 are colder-climate numbers.

Spray foam is the other assembly. It goes on the underside of the roof when that attic should be inside the house, and the vents over that roof are closed. A contractor who sells foam on a vented attic floor, or who calls the blow itself an air seal, is mixing two jobs. Table R402.4.1.1 says air-permeable insulation is not the air seal.

The contractor is not the roofer, the air-conditioning company, or the pest company. A new roof does not insulate the bedrooms. New attic fill does not stop a roof leak or seal a crushed duct. If animals are in the attic, a licensed pest-control company gets them out. We close the openings. We do not claim that license.

Who writes the quote

Quotes are prepared by Russell Y, a building scientist who is BPI certified and certified to perform blower door testing. The test number is reported only when the door is run. An insulation price is not that test. A planning range for an 1,800 square foot attic with about 4 inches of settled fiberglass, brought to R-38, is about $2,100 to $3,350 in blown fiberglass. Removal and foam are separate. The attic planner runs the gap. The bid is the attic we see.

Questions

What does an insulation contractor do?

An insulation contractor installs and removes insulation. On a house, that is usually the attic: air-seal the ceiling, then blow fiberglass or cellulose to R-38. Spray foam is a separate job, on a roof deck. It is not a roof replacement, a duct seal, or pest control.

Is Cardinal Insulation an insulation contractor in Boca Raton?

Yes. Cardinal Insulation of Boca Raton LLC is the insulation contractor at 4263 NW 1st Ave, Boca Raton, FL 33431. Blown-in insulation is the first service. Call (561) 654-7698.

What is the difference between an insulation contractor and a roofer?

The roofer works the outside of the roof. The insulation contractor works the ceiling under it. A new tile roof does not add R-value to the rooms. Blown-in insulation does not repair a leak.

Measured against the Florida code

The attic numbers, not a brochure

The 2023 Florida Building Code, Energy Conservation, Table R402.1.2 sets a climate zone 1 ceiling at R-30 and a climate zone 2 ceiling at R-38. Cardinal installs R-38 and checks the inches. A Florida page that lists R-49 to R-60, or R-3.2 to R-3.8 per inch for both fiberglass and cellulose, is using a different book. Table R402.4.1.1 says air-permeable insulation shall not be used as the air seal.

Quotes are prepared by Russell Y, a building scientist, BPI certified, and certified to perform blower door testing. When the door is run, the result is air changes per hour at 50 pascals, the method in R402.4.1.2. That section limits new houses in climate zones 1 and 2 to 7 ACH50. An insulation job on an existing house is not automatically that test. We report the number only when we measured it.

Insulation numbers Cardinal uses against the Florida code
ItemNumberWhat it means
Zone 1 ceiling, Florida codeR-30 minimumPalm Beach and Broward
Zone 2 ceiling, Florida codeR-38 minimumNot R-49 and not R-60
What Cardinal installsR-38, depth checkedAbove the zone 1 floor
New blown fiberglassAbout R-2.5 per inchNot R-3.2 to R-3.8
Settled fiberglassAbout R-2.2 per inch4 inches is about R-9
New celluloseAbout R-3.6 per inchDenser. Still not an air seal
Open-cell foamAbout R-3.6 per inchA roof-deck product
Closed-cell foamAbout R-6.5 per inch2 inches is about R-13

Loose fill does not stop air. The holes are sealed first. Two inches of closed-cell foam is an air-seal coat, not a finished attic. We do not quote a dollar amount off the power bill. Ducts in a vented attic stay in the heat. The shop for the Boca listing is 4263 NW 1st Ave.
